When trying to analyze the positives and negatives about boot camps for troubled teens, many factors have to be considered. Generalizations don’t work.

One important issue to consider is the cause of the incarceration, which is often drug abuse.

Each case is different. In extreme cases, judges may have to choose between sending a young man to jail or boot camp. Even though the relapse rate is high (over 90%), it’s far better for most young men and women to attend a mandatory boot camp than having to face the horrors of jail.

The personnel that run the boot camps are of utmost importance; if the men or women in charge aren’t dedicated professionals, the chances of long-term behavioral improvement are not encouraging.

Being outside and undergoing rigorous physical exercise on a regular basis is far preferable for most youngsters compared to sitting in a jail cell with inmates who are dangerous and beyond help. And boot camps combine the exercise with schooling, which is beneficial.

Boot camps differ dramatically in personnel and goals for the teenage boys and girls who are having serious problems adjusting to adulthood. The basic concept of uncompromising discipline isn’t perfect, but it’s preferable to sending kids to jail when there is still a chance to turn them into productive citizens.

Boot camps aren’t going to work for all teens. In some cases, young people will become more opposed to discipline and authority and come out worse than they go in. But some of them will improve dramatically; when they hook up with a disciplinarian who has their best interests at heart, major progress can be made.

In extreme cases, it’s close to the end of the line. When a judge has to choose between sending a young man or woman to jail or boot camp, the latter is far preferable in most cases.

Usually it’s the incarcerated youngsters who will determine whether the boot camp is a success or not. If drugs are the problem, the kids will be off them while they are going through the equivalent of basic training. It gives them a chance to consider their alternatives. Some will choose the high road and others will take the low road that leads to an unhappy life at best and prison at worst.

Boot camps may be a last chance, but that’s better than no chance at all.

Boot camps are often the last stop for troubled teens before juvenile courts remand them to spend time in the correctional system. Many boot camps for troubled teens offer parents’ a self help kit that includes home drug tests, DVDs of actual boot camp, as well as little or no cost enrollment including free government help for those who are unable to pay.

There are boot camps that are actually completely free, and they are all state run and funded. These are only available for teens that are already in the juvenile system, and have no other options. Troubled teens themselves will sometimes look for boot camps, trying to find help for what they think is their trouble. To be placed in a boot camp, a teen has to be placed there by a judge, but private programs are available. These programs are not necessarily boot camps, but are behavioral programs through boarding schools such as military schools.

Short term placements in a troubled teen boot camp are considered wilderness programs, and are known to be short programs that rarely offer long term results. Long term boarding at a summer boot camp for troubled teens offer structure, security, behavioral adjustments as well as psychological help for those who request it or are ordered it.

A boot camp is a strict and very structured place that includes staff that appears to run daily activities much like military training instructors. These boot camps are normally state run correctional institutes, and teens are sentenced to these places by judges as a last resort before going into the correctional system. These boot camps are an option for teens in the criminal justice system, but there are also boot camps for teens that are defiant and refuse the boot camp.

There are other troubled teen boot camps that require no judge’s orders, but parents are able to sign their children in for a short term camp. These are normally used for teens that are experiencing their first time in trouble with the law, and parents are trying to scare them straight. These smaller camps offer behavioral modification exercises, and an upfront approach about the behaviors that got them into trouble.

Many troubled teens make lasting friendships with the ‘drill instructors’ at their boot camps, because more times than not, the experience changes the teen’s outlook and perspective permanently. These relationships help to strengthen the bond between parent and child, as well as help open up the lines of communication.

Sometimes your teen acts out in ways you just can’t handle; if you need some outside help, and then boot camp for troubled teens may be exactly what your family needs. Before you pack up some bags and ship your teen off, however, take some time to make sure you choose the right camp for troubled teens.

1. Examine the situation.

What exactly is going on in your teen’s life, and how will the boot camps for troubled teens address those issues? Some camps offer counseling for teens that may be suffering with anxiety or depression, while others focus solely on strenuous physical activities and rigid military-like discipline. Is an extended time period away from home required, or would your teen benefit more from a day camp, where they would come home every evening to spend time with the family? Before you decide on camps for troubled teens, look at various choices and speak with them about your child’s individual needs and ask what solutions they have for those problems.

2. Choosing a camp

After careful consideration you’ve decided on what sort of camp your teen should attend, so now it’s time to delve into the camp itself.

a. What is the teen to adult ration?

Make sure that they will be able to give your teen the individual attention they require.

b. Is the staff qualified?

Make sure that there are staff members that have medical training, that there are certified counselors that specialize in troubled teens, and how long each staff member has been working there.

c. Check how long the camp has been operating.

What do people say about the camp? Ask for referrals so you can ask other families how their child’s experience was, and if their stay at the camp made any progress.

d. What are the camp’s policies?

Ask for a copy of the policies, and review them carefully. Are parents notified if anything illegal or troublesome occurs, and how do they deal with those issues? Can you call or write the teens; can you visit them?

3. Costs

If you are on a tight budget, you may consider a day camp, as they are much cheaper. Find out what equipment your teen is expected to bring and what the camp provides. Are there any fees if there are any late payments or you decide to withdraw your teen from the camp? Whatever you choose, make certain you are aware of all the fees before you sign any paperwork.

Troubled teens can cause a multitude of problems within their family structure. Issues with teens can lead to situations that parents can no longer cope with or manage. Through the service of camps for troubled teens, families are able to piece their lives together again and regain some parental control of their teens. Through therapy, self-motivational techniques, and responsibility many teenagers are enjoying the rewards of a camp for troubled teens. Taking teens out of their home setting can diffuse the situation immediately. This time out gives all the family members some time to clear their heads and refocus on the problems that need addressing.

Depending on the specific teen behavior problems, a boot camp for troubled teens can offer a wide variety of life experiences in different settings. Boot camps and Wilderness therapy programs take teens into a totally self-reliant, outdoor environment and remove them from the temptations and distractions of their usual and most times, negative associations. Breaking the bad influences of outside forces is a beneficial first step in the right direction when signing with a troubled teen camp. Boot camps and Wilderness therapy programs give teens a model of working with a small group of individuals with similar problems. They will experience the trials and tribulations of being in the outdoors and living with the most basic necessities.

Living and working in the great outdoors is a wonderful escape from the pressures in the world of teenagers. Teens suffering from depression, substance abuse, anger management, and oppositional behavior will hear their conscience leading them to make decisions that will work in the best interest for themselves and the group. Therapists will lead sessions in small group settings and one-on-one meetings during the programs. The goal is to gain insight and give hope for troubled teens to be able to re-enter their world armed with better tools to lead productive, healthy, and happy lives.

Summer camps for troubled teens and Wilderness camps work with teens to help them discover the reasons behind their problems and negative behavior. The momentum of gaining self confidence and finding trust in the counselors and therapists will open doors and tear down the walls of discontent. These programs for troubled teens will bring new life back in troubled homes. After the teens have reconnected with their families, therapists will meet with all family members for a smooth transition back home. Boot camps for troubled teens offer hope for a different and better life.

Many parents find that their teens are out of control, that they lack direction and focus. While few children are genuinely bad, many kids are drawn in by drugs, gangs, and other dangerous anti-social influences. It can be very hard for a parent, especially a single parent, to bring their kid back in line. To this end, many charities and hardworking people have formed boot camps for teens, intended to provide direction and focus to kids who’ve strayed into bad behavior.

It is important for any parent considering a boot camp for troubled teens to understand that good behavior cannot simply be beaten or driven into a child. It is not possible to punish a teen to make them behave, and while punishment and consequences are an important part of teaching anyone to behave, they are only part of the process. Good boot camps realize this, and while there are certainly harsh punishments for acting out or breaking the rules, the primary emphasis is to teach the kids self respect, discipline, and good decision making skills. It is impossible to watch a kid at all times, and so teaching them to make the right decisions is much more important than trying to catch them in the act and punish them.

The point of boot camps for troubled teens is to help to convince the teens that they can work hard and be rewarded, and that they are a person of value with important abilities that enable them to do much more than they think they are capable of. This is why such boot camps supplement strict discipline with exercises intended to prove to the teens that they are more than just social rejects or high school drop outs. Most kids stray into drugs, underage sex and crime because they have low self worth and see no benefit to good behavior, which is what boot camps seek to change. Kids who feel that their hard work is appreciated and that their good deeds will not go unrewarded, rarely decide to run around breaking the law!

It is important to know that boot camps are not a magical cure and will not work for every teen. However, many teens find a boot camp to be the first of many steps towards a normal, well adjusted life. They can’t solve every one of a teen’s problems, but often they give them the feelings of self worth and meaningful achievement which lead into a prosperous life.

While being a parent can be an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling experience, it can also be the most challenging of your life. This is especially true when your child becomes troubled and won’t respond to your guidance. The question is how you properly guide a child who won’t listen to you or follow family rules. If your teen is out of control and on the path to jail or worse where can you turn for help? There are many alternatives from religion to family counseling to boarding school to a relatively new resource, teen boot camps.

The concept of teen boot camps began as a last resort before a juvenile detention facility or jail. Camps may be either privately or state run. The goal of this type of facility is to challenge your teen, both mentally and physically, while providing strict guidelines to which they must adhere. Boot camps focus on changing the negative behavior and attitudes a teen may be exhibiting.

A true teen boot camp troubled teens resembles traditional military boot camp in many ways. The cadet can expect to dress in some type of uniform, march in formations and answer “yes sir’ and “no ma’am”. This type of boot camp for troubled teens can help address problems facing many troubled teens such as lack of discipline, structure and respect, both for themselves and others. The activities at a boot camp are designed to help the teen gain self-confidence, self-awareness and self-respect by challenging them and helping them to experience success.

The profile of the type of teen best suited for success with a boot camp environment includes someone who will listen to authority (even if he/she isn’t right now), someone who has just veered off track but not jumped the rails entirely and someone who is not experiencing serious substance abuse or emotional problems. These types of farther reaching issues should most likely be addressed by a longer term solution than a boot camp can offer. The camps usually last from 20-40 days so any issues your teen may be dealing with should be able to be addressed during that time frame. The camps also do not typically offer any type of one-on-one counseling that might be of benefit with deeper emotional issues. However, boot camps can be an effective, short-term answer to a troubled teen and the jump-start needed to get your teen back on a positive path.

There is also a Christian boot camp for troubled teens that you can look into.

While it is a great responsibility to raise children, it is an even greater challenge for you to raise a teenager. A teen is in his/her formative years. What happens during these years is a good indication of how a teenager may turn out in the future. During these years, a teen is bound to be searching for a wide array of answers to questions, looking for acceptance among peers, and dealing with confusion in general.

While it is advised that you give your teen enough space to handle things his/herself, it is also pertinent that you not let him/her go too far out from that which you know to be a safety zone.

There are many cases where you, as a parent, may feel you are failing in raising your teenager; or, you may feel you are just not cut out for all of this. Nothing could be further from the truth. You would be wise to shield yourself from such feelings, if your teenager goes out of what you feel is his/her safety zone.

If you have noticed the following traits in your teen’s behavior, it may be time to consider a boot camp for troubled teens to aid you:

• Your teen shows an erratic pattern in his/her temper, and shows a great indifference to things around him/her
• Your teen is running away often, and/or disappearing without any indication of where they are
• You suspect your teen is either drinking, smoking or experimenting with drugs
• You feel your teen is hanging with the wrong crowd, who will eventually lead your teen on to even worse behavior.

If you feel that your teen’s behavior has finally “hit the fan,” so to speak, would a summer camp for troubled teens be your best solution?

These boot camps for troubled teens are highly effective, as a military approach is taken, and a high level of discipline is required. There are drills and physical exercise training which take place in these camps for troubled teens which help instill discipline.

Considering camps for troubled teens should be a last resort. Only you should be the “boss,” and assigning that responsibility to someone else is something that should be carefully considered. Be sure you have tried everything before you actually enroll your teen in such a camp – you’ll be thankful later.

In closing, talk with your teen often, and be your teen’s friend – no matter what. In being that shoulder of support, it will build a lasting bond, and your teen will understand that the love and support he/she needs is in his/her parents alone.
