Many parents make the decision to send their sons away to boarding school. While there are certain stigmas associated with boarding school and many believe it is a bad idea for boys and girls to be separated during their formative years, there are many benefits to boarding schools for boys.

Academic Quality

Boarding schools tend to provide small class sizes, lots of one on one attention, and a high quality of education, as compared to many public schools. Faculties typically hold advanced degrees in their subject matter. There is also usually a large variety of courses, including AP classes as well as languages, such as Latin.

A boarding school for boys also generally has high quality facilities and amenities for students to enhance the learning experience, such as theaters, libraries, and athletic complexes.

Learning Style

Some experts believe that boys and girls have different learning styles. While girls benefit more from having ideas placed in context, boys do much better with a ‘confrontational’ style of teaching in which they are put on the spot to answer questions. Since classes consist of only boys, the teachers can tailor the course to best suit their needs.

Responsibility

Being away from parents is difficult for any child at a young age, but this experience teaches him to be more responsible and learn how to rely on himself. Boarding schools for troubled boys, students can rely on peers and faculty, but must learn how to manage their time and cultivate their own interests. This experience can be great preparation for college, not to mention increased self confidence.

Lifelong Bonds

Most boys who attend affordable boarding school for boys will no doubt make some of the closest friends of their lives. Without the distraction of winning girls’ attention, boys bond with each other and are exposed to new friends with diverse backgrounds. Most boys who attend Christian boarding schools for boys feel a strong sense of loyalty to their alma mater and form a network that will help them through college and into the future.

Additionally, boys at boarding school often have closer relationships with teachers than in public schools. This bonding process improves academic performance. Boys also learn about the new community that their boarding school is located near, fostering an appreciation for a different culture or lifestyle than their own hometown.

Like many other aspects of modern society, an all boys boarding school has come a long way in recent years, providing a very healthy, positive environment where students enjoy a high-quality education. Financial aid for private schools is more readily available than ever before, making boarding school a viable option for students from a variety of backgrounds and income levels.

College prep boarding schools pride themselves on providing a top-quality education for high school age boys, while junior boarding schools are for younger boys, often elementary school through eighth grade. Some boys boarding schools focus on preparing serious students for a career in music or the arts. A Military boarding school for boys can prepare students for a military career and give them an opportunity to get a taste of the military environment. Other boarding schools focus on helping youngsters with various disabilities and challenges, such as visual or hearing impairments. Still other schools aim to provide help for “troubled teens,” with programs that focus on overcoming attention deficit disorder, behavioral problems, or even substance abuse.

There are many reasons why parents may prefer to have their son educated at a boys boarding school. The quality of the education provided is often a very important factor. Usually the teachers and staff at boarding schools are carefully selected, highly qualified professionals with excellent credentials. Class sizes are generally small, and discipline is less of a problem than at most public schools, so more classroom time can be spent actually teaching rather than dealing with disruptions. And since the students have contact with staff members throughout the day, the students have the opportunity to benefit from a level of counseling and mentoring that would just not be available in a public school environment.

Boarding schools for boys also provide excellent amenities: libraries, media centers, science laboratories, and sports facilities are often far superior to those found in local schools. Many boys thrive in a structured environment, and they benefit from the feeling of community and solidarity that boarding school provides. Boarding school gives them an opportunity to make friends with other boys who have similar interests. A bright student who is a high achiever may be ridiculed in a public school, or made to feel like the odd one out; at a college prep school he’ll have the benefit of being surrounded by others who also have a serious academic focus.

While looking for a perfect, educational solution for your son, a boys boarding school has more than likely been a passing thought in your mind. Unfortunately, many boarding schools have a negative stigma about them, and you are sure to have heard a fair number of horror stories. You may also believe that a boy boarding school is only for so-called “problem” kids. The important thing for you to do is to clear your mind of any preconceived notions that you may have heard about boarding schools and start over, doing this important research yourself from scratch.

You probably realize that the quality of education that is available in more conventional private and public schools is typically substandard, and as far as some of the teachers are concerned, your son is just a number — not a priority. Many teachers who are in the parochial school systems are doing it just as a job, and they teach only enough to make the minimum qualifications dictated to them by the school system. In short, these teachers’ hearts are not into the profession of teaching. Your son is able to sense this. If the teacher’s heart is not in educating your son, wouldn’t it likely follow that your son’s heart will not be in learning also?

Boarding schools for boys offer a significant advantage over the deteriorating quality of the more conventional parochial schools. They are often located a fair distance away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and the teachers are there out of a genuine concern for each student, and not just to make a living. In setting the learning environment away from the fast-paced life, the learning process becomes more deliberate, informal, and a “one-on-one” learning atmosphere is easily apparent. A mutual trust between teacher and student is fashioned quickly, and because of this, students respect the extra drive given to them at these schools.

Finally, consider all of the magical and valuable benefits that a boarding school for boys can provide your son. The majority of those who have found success in the most sought after professions — doctors, lawyers, etc. — have attended boys boarding schools at some point in their educational run. This is because the learning atmosphere is more relaxed and any negative distractions and influences are not allowed in. Because of this, students can stay focused on their studies and accomplishments, rather than the usual tempting distractions of the fast paced world.

Boys have special needs that need attending to. Some boys do well in a co-educational environment, but, just as often, boys benefit from education with their same-gender peers. Single gender education can promote the best of a boy’s abilities without distraction.

Private boarding schools eliminate distractions. The structured environment encourages discipline, thoughtful study, exercise, and the vigorous pursuit of personal excellence. A boys’ boarding school focuses the pupil’s attention on achieving personal goals that will serve him well over the course of his life as well as over the course of his studies. In a nurturing setting that downplays sex appeal, while it encourages excellence, a boy can match wits and talents in a structured curriculum that builds character and fortitude without needless frivolity.

Some say life is a battle field and anyone who has lived long enough would agree. Better to face the slings and arrows life throws your way knowing you are in good company; part of a community forged in the crucible of rigid academic study and regimented expectations. A boarding school for boys binds its students into lifelong bonds of camaraderie. They know each other’s foibles and they also know they can count on each other for assistance. These lifelong bonds will serve them well over the long haul. Boys who attend boarding schools in the USA remember their classmates much longer than public school students, who have been thrown together willy-nilly. A boy’s boarding school forges a fraternity that sticks together through thick and thin. We lived together once: we will live together always. That’s not a bad lesson to carry throughout you days. If you give your son that, you will have given him an experience that lasts a lifetime and that will carry him through good times and bad.

School and learning everything you need to learn to be successful later in life. It’s hard enough in public school. Sending your boy to boarding school is a difficult decision and one that will weigh heavily on a mother’s heart. Despite that, it is often the best decision any boy has ever suffered. In an atmosphere geared toward encouraging the best a boy can produce, the boy usually excels and, after graduation the excellence continues. Many great men have graduated from boarding high schools and they have made their marks on the world. This is a time-tested avenue that leads to excellence. If you have boy you think would benefit, consider enrolling him.

If you have a teenager whose behavior is becoming more than you can handle, it is time to put them in a place that will support your desire, as parents, to get them back on the right path. The greatest roadblock between your teenager’s troubled behavior and their happiness is you. A teen’s parents must be willing to face up to the problems because a troubled teenager cannot fix it by themselves.

There are various options for parents who need to get a troubled teen into a place that can help them.

Here are a few places for troubled teens:

Community organizations: Sometimes just getting your child involved in a community project that peaks their interest can help them. For instance, if they enjoy art, put them in touch with a local organization that does community murals. For a teen who enjoys building things, a charity like Habitat for Humanity would be a perfect fit. Through joining a group effort to improve the lives of others, your teen will have their sense of self-worth increased exponentially and this, in many cases, can be them out of their troubles.

Religious institution: For millions of families, religion is a central part of family life. Almost every religious institution will offer some form of counseling, youth group or extra-curricular activity that your teen can join. If your son or daughter is willing to go, they can find the support of others as well as the power of their faith to get them through their problems.

Boarding school: There are boarding schools for boys around the country for troubled teens, including military schools for boys. The idea is that teens are around others who also need help which gives them perspective on their own situation. They are also surrounded by specially trained teachers and support staff who are devoted to improving your child’s confidence and academics.

Boot camps: Choosing to send a teen to boot camp is a tough decision. The idea that your child will be scared straight and have their selfish or inconsiderate behaviors trained out of them scares some parents, but good boot camps are a proven success. Often, they are the last chance before having to send a criminal teen to jail. They are not the solution for every problem, so research thoroughly before sending your teen.

Counseling: One of the first and best places to take your troubled teen is to a counselor who is trained to communicate with them and help them work through their troubles.
