For many parents, a child’s teenage years can be one of the most challenging stretches of parenthood. A parent may reach a point at which they’ve lost control of the situation and will seek alternatives. At this junction, many parents may pursue help from outside sources, such as a boot camp for teens.
A troubled teen will often engage in self-destructive behaviors. A teen boot camp focuses on the troubled teen and attempts to direct the teen’s rebellious behaviors in a more productive and healthy direction. They are operated in a very structured day to day environment, not unlike a military organization. Most require a stay, of anywhere from two weeks to eight weeks depending upon their evaluation of the child and assessment of each child’s needs. Their primary focus for each student is to instill new levels of self-respect as well as instilling values which will help the teen to conduct him or herself in ways which are beneficial to them and to society.
A parent should take the time to evaluate their own child before considering enrollment into a teen boot camp. If your child cannot accept the conditions set forth in the boot camp environment, the experience may not succeed. The teen boot camp environment, somewhat mirrors a military boot camp regiment. Teens are often dressed in uniforms, and will have strong authoritative figures leading and teaching them. Any show of disrespect to authority is considered a major transgression. All interaction with family and friends will be prohibited for a set period of time. If drug abuse is in part responsible for a teen’s troubled behavior, the teen boot camp environment may not be suitable for this problem. Teens boot camp are not recognized as long term solutions for the troubled teen, but rather a brisk but effective short term learning experience in obedience and respect. They are not an unsurpassed solution for all troubled teens.
Boot camps for teens are either privately funded or government run. If your teen has already entered the penal system, they could be sentenced to a term in a government run teen boot camp.
When considering a teen boot camp to help a troubled teen, it is advisable to research the teen boot camp you’re considering. All operate under basically the same protocol, with the same general objectives, but some may be more suited to your teen’s problems than others.
