Many parents find that their teens are out of control, that they lack direction and focus. While few children are genuinely bad, many kids are drawn in by drugs, gangs, and other dangerous anti-social influences. It can be very hard for a parent, especially a single parent, to bring their kid back in line. To this end, many charities and hardworking people have formed boot camps for teens, intended to provide direction and focus to kids who’ve strayed into bad behavior.
It is important for any parent considering a boot camp for troubled teens to understand that good behavior cannot simply be beaten or driven into a child. It is not possible to punish a teen to make them behave, and while punishment and consequences are an important part of teaching anyone to behave, they are only part of the process. Good boot camps realize this, and while there are certainly harsh punishments for acting out or breaking the rules, the primary emphasis is to teach the kids self respect, discipline, and good decision making skills. It is impossible to watch a kid at all times, and so teaching them to make the right decisions is much more important than trying to catch them in the act and punish them.
The point of boot camps for troubled teens is to help to convince the teens that they can work hard and be rewarded, and that they are a person of value with important abilities that enable them to do much more than they think they are capable of. This is why such boot camps supplement strict discipline with exercises intended to prove to the teens that they are more than just social rejects or high school drop outs. Most kids stray into drugs, underage sex and crime because they have low self worth and see no benefit to good behavior, which is what boot camps seek to change. Kids who feel that their hard work is appreciated and that their good deeds will not go unrewarded, rarely decide to run around breaking the law!
It is important to know that boot camps are not a magical cure and will not work for every teen. However, many teens find a boot camp to be the first of many steps towards a normal, well adjusted life. They can’t solve every one of a teen’s problems, but often they give them the feelings of self worth and meaningful achievement which lead into a prosperous life.
